sand sand everywhere....

I am starting my post with this lovely picture because it soothes my parched soul that is already getting tired of seeing sand and cactus everywhere
and I have just been here a month….

Okay….so the latest update…
We are in the middle of the Indian deserts…just landed a couple of months back from the happening world of New York!
and what a change its been...
not that I have too much to complain- being spoilt with the comforts of home is another high altogether!
Haven't yet been allotted a house, so we are staying in the mess and living out of suitcases…so NO internet as well!!
Not done much of sightseeing yet, becoz its unbearably hot after 10am till 6:30pm…
and its going to get hotter ( May, June, July are still to come!!! )
Mornings and nights are nice and cool…
So the whole day we are cooped up inside a couple of rooms waiting for the day to get over, and venture out only when the sun is setting…
which is a beautiful sight by the way, as the sky is clear, the colors are bright and the sand dunes are endless….

And thankfully for my peace of mind, the kids have started school…
so with no house to look after and no food to cook- I have all the time in the world to:
read ( am putting my kindle to good use and the Unit Library is well stocked)
paint and draw- try out some new techniques…
will be putting up some pictures for you to see sooooon!
My long suffering clients are all on hold because of the erratic net connection…
I reeeaaally appreciate the patience guys and I promise to make it up to everyone as soon as I have a home and a permanent net connection!
and because I am not much of a sleeper or a TV watcher, I still have a lot of time on my hands…
but as you all know- too much of idleness doesn't suit me, I tend to go crazy and grumpy and grouchy with nothing to do!!
So being the only lady in the Regiment at the moment, I have taken on the job of giving my inputs on the landscaping of the mess lawns and surrounding areas…
hahaha….I thought it would be easy and fun (and something that I had always wanted to sink my teeth into)…but when you have only sand and cactus to work with-you can only plan so much!

Now the story of this back of beyond station is that most of the place is still virgin land… even the mess area where we are used to lushly landscaped lawns and beautiful flowers…
Here its still a desert…all sand and thorny bushes and massive yellow rocks!!
absolutely no greenery at all…
and there's a picture for you-just to give you an idea!

But we are being ambitious- after all the army is known for its innovativeness and making the best of whats been thrown at it!
So the grass has been laid, and its barely surviving…the areas for the band, the dance floor, and the bar have been set aside (of course!)
a fountain has been put...
other than that we have a huge expanse of land that we have to give some sort of shape and design and make it aesthetically appealing…
so while we rack our brains as to which plants are hardy enough to survive the scorching heat and how and where to put a lily pond (which we are crossing our fingers, may survive) and where to make a inevitable cactus/ rock garden…(but with slightly better looking cactus!)
I will be updating our progress on this blog as the project moves forward…
maybe get a tip or two from some of you…
OR maybe give someone a couple of ideas for what to do in the space that they have in thier homes…

here is a tentative landscape plan that we have come up with…after brainstorming with the CO and other officers…
and please remember that I am a novice landscape artist...so not a very finished layout...
but you get the general drift, right?

what do you think?
any ideas?  :-)
